Book Review: The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center was exactly the book I needed. I had been stuck in an awful reading slump for about a month and a half, and this was the first book I picked up. When I tell you guys from the moment I picked it up I couldn't put it down I'm not joking. It literally pulled me straight out of my reading slump. From the very first chapters I was legitimately hooked and didn't want to put the book down.
One of my favorite things about this book was how it flips society's expectations. Normally we see male bodyguards, but this book flipped the narrative and gave us a strong, capable female bodyguard, Hannah Brooks, who is assigned to protect a famous actor, Jack Stapleton. I loved this twist so much, like ✨girl power✨. It was so refreshing and empowering, and I think it makes the story stand out.
And of course one of my favorite tropes... fake datinggg. I'm a sucker for any book that includes fake dating, and this book did such a good job with it. Watching their relationship start as something that was staged developing into something real was one of the best parts of the book. The tension, awkward moments, and the slow burn was done perfectly (👏 round of applause for Katherine 👏).
But I think what really made me fall in love with this book was the emotional depth of it. It wasn't just a cute romance book. There were moments that hit harder than I had expected, especially when it came to grief, family, and personal growth. Hannah felt like a real person to me, not just a character someone made up. I was definitely rooting for her the whole time I read the book (literally a girl boss).
The writing style of the book was super easy to read, which was exactly what I needed to get me out of my reading slump. The book was funny, heartfelt, and engaging without making me feel too heavy. I laughed, smiled, and definitely had to pause and yell at the characters like a crazy person.
Overall, this book had everything I love in a book. A unique twist, amazing characters that I cared about, a fake dating storyline, and emotional moments. It reminded me why I love reading and it pulled me out of a reading slump I didn't think I'd be able to stop.
If you're looking for something to get you out of a reading slump or just want a good romance book, I would 100% recommend this book, especially if you're a fan of a good fake dating trope.
